Much of our business as graphic designers is branding for businesses. This includes the all important logo! Here are two major myths we would like to dispel about designing a successful and appropriate logo for your business.
Myth #1
A logo must incorporate some or all of the elements of what your business is about. For example, if you’re a dentist, you have to a molar in your logo. Yikes! What is more unattractive than a big tooth! There really is no way to make that nice.
We suggest this:
Take the feel of your business, rather than a literal image. A good solution for the dreaded dentist logo for example, is to make people feel that you are professional yet friendly, and they don’t need to feel threatened, because let’s face it – who likes a trip to Dr. Tooth? So if you want to be friendly and approachable, use fonts and colours that give that feeling.
Myth #2
A good logo has lots of tiny details, because come on you want your money’s worth right? And detail means the designer spent lots of time on it.
We suggest this:
Think Nike. Think FedEx. Think Staples. Notice anything in common? Simplicity. Some of these don’t even have icons, just the word. Remember you’re not only paying a graphic designer for their time in creating a logo – you’re paying for their expertise at figuring out what will best represent your business to your target audience. Detail doesn’t equal a great logo.
